Published on November 7, 2015 under American Hockey League (AHL)
Ontario Reign News Release
Ontario, CA - The Ontario Reign, proud American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL), visit the Stockton Heat tonight at 7:30 at Stockton Arena in Stockton, California. Tonight is the first of 12 regular-season meetings between the two teams.
Old ECHL Rivals Collide:
Ontario and Stockton are two of three California markets to crossover from the ECHL to the American Hockey League last summer. The two sides battled in the ECHL since Ontario's inaugural season in 2008-09 and last season Ontario went a perfect 8-0-0 against Stockton.
LoVerde Approaching 100:
Reign team captain Vincent LoVerde is one point away from 100 as a professional. The Chicago, Illinois, native enters tonight's contest with 26 pro goals and 73 assists for 99 points.
Kempe with the Hot Hands:
Forward Adrian Kempe recorded a hat trick last Thursday against the San Diego Gulls in a 4-1 win and has six points (four goals, two assists) in his last five games.
Smothering Defense:
The Reign hold the AHL's best overall defense, averaging 1.67 goals-against per game and leads the league with 23.33 shots-against per game. The team's defense also shines bright on the penalty kill, earning a league-best 93.0 percent success rate (three goals against on 43 chances).
Scouting the Heat:
Forward Freddie Hamilton leads the Heat with three goals, all scored on the power play, and is tied for the team lead with four points. Goaltender Jon Gillies has been the Heat's go-to guy, appearing in seven contests earning a 2-3-1 record with a 2.31 goals-against average and .920 save percentage.
Making the Move:
The Heat joined the American Hockey League with the Calgary Flames' AHL affiliate moving from Glens Falls, New York to Stockton, California last summer.
