Déjà vu All Over Again in 12-11 Loss

June 14, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release

South Bend, IN– For the second consecutive night, the Dayton Dragons (27-37) and the South Bend Silver Hawks (40-25) put up big offensive numbers to thrill the Coveleski Stadium crowd. Much to the delight of the home crowd, the Hawks pulled out another thrilling one run win, scoring two in the bottom of the eighth inning overcoming a Dragons lead of 11-4 to beat Dayton 12-11.

South Bend jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in each of the first and second innings. Dragons starter Jon George (ND) would not make it out of the fourth inning, lasting 3.2 innings allowing six runs on eight hits. The right hander struck out and walked one before giving way to Jared Sanders (ND) with one down in the fourth inning.

The Dragons trailed 4-0 heading into the top of the third inning but had the makings of a big inning in the second against Hawks starter Ross Ohlendorf (ND) loading the bases with one down, but failing to get a run home. Dayton opened the third with five consecutive hits against the right hander. Phil Gentry doubled, Drew Anderson singled and B.J. Szymanski singled, scoring Gentry. Jeremiah Piepkorn then singled, scoring both Anderson and Szymanski. Tonys Gutierrez then doubled for the fifth consecutive hit to open the inning. After a John Purdom sac fly scored Gutierrez to make it 4-4, Bobby Mosby hammered his second HR of the season an opposite field blast to right center and the Dragons led 6-4.

It was more of the same for Dayton off Ohlendorf in the fourth, as the Dragons put together another big inning, this time scoring five runs on six consecutive hits. In the fourth, all of the Dayton offense came with two down. Gutierrez picked up an RBI double to give the Dragons a 7-4 lead. Purdom's RBI single to center field made it 8-4. Ohlendorf was lifted in favor of Josh Perrault (ND) who gave up an RBI single to Bradley Key to make it 9-4. Trevor Lawhorn's two RBI double was the sixth consecutive hit for the Dragons in the inning and put the Miami Valley's team up 11-4 after three and a half innings.

The Silver Hawks came back with two off George in the fourth to close to within 11-6. Jared Sanders (ND) took the 11-6 lead into the sixth inning and with two down looked as if he would get a 1-2-3 inning with a ground ball off the bat of Agustin Murillo that was kicked by Anderson at shortstop to extend the inning. A single off Sanders and a walk loaded the bases for Cesar Nicolas, who crushed a Sanders offering for a grand slam home run. All the runs were unearned, but the round tripper got South Bend to within a single run at 11-10.

Alexander Farfan (LP, 1-5) took over for Sanders in the eighth inning and struggled to throw strikes. The right hander, who had 22 walks and 10 strikeouts entering his appearance in the seventh, walked the leadoff man Mark Reynolds. After Travis Gulick moved Reynolds to second with a sac bunt, Farfan walked Emilio Bonafacio to put runners at first and second with one down. Jereme Milons flew out to center moving Reynolds to third with two down. Murillo, who entered play as the second leading hitter in the MWL and tied for the league lead in runs batted in, knocked a double past Bradley Key at third into left field that scored both runners and the Silver Hawks led 12-11.

Matt Elliott (SV, 16) allowed a lead off single to Purdom, who was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a ground out before Elliott got Lawhorn to bounce out to short to end the game and hand Dayton its 14th one run loss of the season.

The Dragons and Silver Hawks wrap up the three game series at Coveleski Stadium on Wednesday night. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the game live, beginning with the pre game show at 7:30 PM. Wednesday's first pitch is 8:00 PM, with RHP Homer Bailey getting the start for the Dragons. The Silver Hawks will send RHP A.J. Shappi to the mound.
