West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK - Two runs in the first inning were enough for West Michigan in a 2-1 victory over Lansing.

The first five Whitecaps batters of the game reached base off Lansing starter Russ Savickas. Two of those hitters came through with RBI hits: Wilkin Ramirez singled and Brent Dlugach drove in a second run with a double.

Although Savickas settled down, it was Andrew Kown who took over the game. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning when the Lugnuts put together back-to-back singles by David Corrente and Eugenio Velez.

Jason Armstrong then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Corrente and slice the lead in half at 2-1.

But Kown pitched through the seventh inning and allowed just three hits and two walks. He struck out five.

Anthony Tomey was perfect in the eighth and ninth and earned the save.

Kown picked up the victory, which was his first since May 24. Nick McIntyre doubled in the first inning for West Michigan and scored the Whitecaps first run. The hit extended his hitting streak to nine games, which matched a season high for the Whitecaps. Dlugach hit safely in nine straight games April 29 to May 7.

McIntyre finished three-for-four at the plate.

Savickas went six innings and gave up a total of seven hits. Jeremy Harper followed with two shutout innings in relief for the Lugnuts.

Sweep? West Michigan will try to sweep a series for the first time this season and win three in a row for the second time this year as the series against the Lugnuts concludes Wednesday at Fifth Third Ballpark. LHP Chi-Hung Cheng (3-4, 3.19) will be on the mound for Lansing against Whitecaps RHP Matt Righter (4-0, 2.37). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Eikenhout Incorporated Pre Game Show begins at 6:50 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL at mlive.com.
