Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
A four run third inning set the tone for Peoria, as the Swing could not rally and dropped the series opener to the Chiefs, 6-1, Tuesday night at John O'Donnell Stadium. The game was the first of six between the two teams that will wind down the first half of the season, the last four of which will be in Peoria.
The Chiefs (33-32) took the lead in the top half of the third inning, as Aaron Sisk had an RBI single to plate Sam Fuld, and Ryan Harvey ripped a three-run homer for a 4-0 Chiefs lead.
Down 5-0 after an Eric Patterson home run, the Swing (33-31) tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs and none on, Ankiel drilled a line drive homer beyond the wall in right, his fifth home run in 17 games this season. Ankiel, the converted pitcher who had not started since injuring his hamstring at West Michigan on Monday, ranks third on the Swing with five long balls despite joining the team at the end of May.
Swing starter Donnie Smith (0-2) lasted five innings for the Swing, allowing five runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked two for Quad Cities, picking up his second loss in four starts this season. Quinton Robertson worked two scoreless for the Swing, striking out two and allowing only one hit. Jaymie Torres chipped in with two innings as well, yielding one run on two hits.
For Peoria it was Chris Shaver (3-5) notching the victory. The tall lefty was stellar through seven innings, allowing only the Ankiel home run and four other hits.
UP NEXT: The Swing take on Peoria in their last home game of the season's first half Wednesday night, sending RHP Matt Scherer (2-5, 4.09) to the mound against RHP Grant Johnson (0-0,1.80). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and pregame coverage will kickoff at 6:45 p.m. on WKBF AM-1270.
PROMOTION: Wednesday will be a Hooters/97 Rock Beverage Night at John O'Donnell Stadium, featuring the pregame music of Jim the Mule and drink specials until 8:30 p.m.
