Cyclones Run Winning Streak To League Record 15 Games!
February 23, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI - A four goal explosion in the second period helped propel the Cincinnati Cyclones to a 5-4 whootout win over Elmira on Saturday night. The win was the 15th straight for the Cyclones-establishing an ECHL record. Mathieu Aubin and Thomas Beuaregard each had a pair of goals to help Cincinnati along the way.
Elmira scored two power play goals in the first period to open a 2-0 edge. Benoit Doucet netted his 20th goal at 8:19. Defenseman Kyle Wharton blasted his fourth goal of the campaign over the right shoulder of Cincinnati netminder Maxime Daigneault at 15:36 to open the advantage. Despite trailing, the Cyclones outshot the Jackals, 14-13, in the opening frame.
The Cyclones rallied with four goals in the second period to knot the game at 4-4. Cincinnati netted a pair of five-on-three power play goals 13 seconds apart from Mathieu Aubin, his 15th and 16th goals of the season. David Desharnais and Olivier Latendresse assisted on the first score and Thomas Beauregard and Latendresse added the helpers on the second. The 13 second gaps between goals is the shortest time frame for an individual to score back-to-back goals in Cyclones history.
Desharnais recorded an assist for the 18th consecutive game (3-29-32 points)-passing Peter Kasowski of Roanoke Valley, who had a 17 game string, from Oct. 26 through Dec. 7, 1991 (28 assists).
Cincinnati grabbed its first lead of the night at 5:24 with another five-on-three power play goal from Beauregard, his 23rd of the season. Jason Deitsch and Latendresse picked up the assists. Elmira got a power play goal and then a shorthanded score from Chaz Johnson-61 seconds apart to re-capture the lead for the Jackals at 4-3. Beauregard then netted his second goal of the night and 24th of the season on an unassisted shorthanded goal from the slot. The second period ended tied at 4-4, with Elmira holding the shooting edge in the frame, 14 shots to twelve.
There was no scoring in the third period or overtime, so the game went to a shootout. Maxime Daigneault did not allow a shootout goal, while Beauregard and Aubin netted the scores for Cincinnati to take the 5-4 win.
The Cyclones began their 15-game winning streak against Dayton on Jan. 16 in a 3-2 win. The club has outscored the opposition, 61-26, during the run. It is the longest winning streak in ECHL history, breaking the mark set by Knoxville (1992-93) and Louisiana (2001-02).
The crowd of 5178 was the fourth largest to see a game at U.S. Bank Arena this season.
For the first time in team history, the Cincinnati Cyclones are 32 games above .500, with a 40-8-3 record and sole possession of first place in the North Division-fifteen points ahead of second place Elmira. The triumph gives Cincinnati a 24-2-1 record since December 15. Elmira is 31-16-6. The 40 wins are the most ever by the club.
The Cyclones open their four-game California swing on Thursday night with a 10pm (ET) contest against the Stockton Thunder. That game will be carried on 96 Rock, as will the other three games during the road trip.
Tickets for all Cyclones games can be purchased at the U.S. Bank Arena box office, all Ticketmaster outlets including select Kroger stores, charge by phone at 513-562-4949 or online at ticketmaster.com.
