Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

The Victoria Salmon Kings faced off against the Idaho Steelheads tonight in Victoria for the second game of a three-game set. Coming into the matchup, Idaho sat one point behind Victoria who came in sitting in first place in the West division with 69 points.

For the majority of the first period, the Steelheads dominated the Salmon Kings' net, but as the game progressed, fans were treated to plenty of back-and-forth action. Late in the period, Milan Gajic got handed a four minute minor for an errant high stick, leaving the Kings short-handed. Victoria killed off the penalty. Despite seeing a whole lot of rubber, both Julien Ellis and Matt Zaba stayed strong in net for their respective teams to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.

Early into the second frame, the Kings found themselves on a five-on-three power play where Kiel McLeod made no mistake tapping in a rebound for his 14th goal of the season. Milan Gajic and Gary Gladue drew the assists on the play. The remainder of the period featured a lot of end-to-end action, but again both goaltenders stood up to the challenge leaving the score 1-0 Salmon Kings after two periods of play.

The Salmon Kings had an offensive outburst in the third period, opening with a power play marker off the stick of Jordan Krestanovich. Gary Gladue slid a quick pass across the crease to an awaiting Krestanovich, where the forward made no mistake tallying his 13th goal on the year. Matt Kelly counted the other assist on the play. Kevin Estrada gave the Kings a 3-0 lead with a shorthanded marker at the 7:32 mark of the period. Ash Goldie and Paul Ballantyne added the helpers on Estrada's 15th goal of the year. Wes Goldie would join the parade to the score sheet a few minutes later batting his 25th goal of the season out of the air and behind Zaba to make the score 4-0. A few minutes later, Marc-Andre Bernier added to the lead tallying the Kings second short handed marker of the period. Chris St. Jacques finished the scoring on the power play for the Kings as Victoria cruised to a 6-0 victory. Julien Ellis was the games first star stopping all 44 shots fired his way for his second shutout of the season.

The Kings went 3/7=42.8% on the power play and fired 34 shots on net while Idaho went 0/7=0% with the man advantage and finished with 44 shots.

Game three of the series goes tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. The Kings then welcome the Las Vegas Wranglers to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for a three-game set beginning on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Call 220-7889 for tickets.
