Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
Anchorage, AK - The Las Vegas Wranglers (35-10-8, 78 points) were defeated by the Alaska Aces (26-19-5, 57 points) 2-1 in a shootout at Sullivan Arena on Friday night. Aces forward Michael Lambert scored in the seventh round of a sudden death shootout to lift the Aces to their fifth straight win. The Aces ended an eight-game skid to the Wranglers as goalie Marek Schwartz made 25 saves in regulation and stopped five of seven Wranglers in the shootout for the win. Las Vegas goalie Daniel Manzato stopped 33 of 34 Alaska shots in regulation and four of seven in shootout for the loss. Alaska's Matt Robinson and Las Vegas forward Bruce Mulherin scored the only goals in regulation. The Wranglers and Aces meet again on Saturday at 8:15 pm (PST) at Sullivan Arena.
In the first period, after a scoreless 18 minutes of play Las Vegas staked claim to the first lead of the night at 18:06. Defenseman Jason Krischukl held in an attempted clear by the Aces and fired the puck to the net towards the Alaska net. Left wing Bruce Mulherin deflected the low-flying puck past Aces goalie Marek Schwartz for his 13th goal of the season and a 1-0 Wranglers lead.
In the second period, the Aces tied the game 1-1 with a rebound goal by Matt Robinson. Las Vegas goalie Daniel Manzato had stopped his first 23 shots of the night prior to Robinson's tally at 14:42. Former Wrangler Lee Green assisted on Robinson's 14th goal of the season. The Aces outshot Las Vegas 15-7 in the middle period.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, the two teams went to a lengthy shootout. Aces forwards Matt Robinson and Josh Soares each scored on the first two shootout attempts for Alaska. Las Vegas countered with two tallies in the first five shooters with goals by Aki Seitsonen and Josh Sciba. In sudden death of the shootout, Marek Scwartz stuffed Wrangler attempts by Adam Cracknell and Kelly Czuy. Michael Lambert beat Daniel Manzato with the final shot in the seventh round, lifting the Aces to a one-goal win.
The Wranglers continue their longest road trip of the season with two more games in Anchorage on Saturday and Sunday. The team will then head to Victoria for three games before returning home.
