Bombers hold off Johnstown for second win in Troy
February 23, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Troy, OH- Bombers netminder Rejean Beauchemin would make 37 saves and earn the game's third star on the way to backstopping the Defending American Conference Champion Dayton Bombers to a 4-2 win over rival Johnstown Chiefs in front of a boisterous 3,759 at Troy's historic Hobart Arena on Saturday night.
Dayton wasted little time proving to the Chiefs who's "home away from home" they were in, as recently reacquired Bomber Corey LeClair scored his third goal of the season just 1:41 in, off a lone assist by Ryan Smyth. Smyth, who eventually earned the game's first star, added his name to the scorer's column with his 12th goal of the year with a shorthanded breakaway goal. Battling just past the midway point of the period, Ryan Reid notched his 4th goal of the season from a bounce in front of the net, making it 3-0 Dayton early. Despite leading the Bombers in first period shots 12-11, the Chiefs were unable to find the back of the net.
Dayton stepped up in the second period out shooting Johnstown 15-9, but it was the Chiefs Rob Drummond finally registering their first goal with just :46 left in the second to cut the lead to two goals after forty minutes.
Like Dayton in the prior period, Johnstown upped it's tempo in the third, as Jean Desrochers scored the team's second goal of the night, making it a 3-2 game 6:47 in. Johnstown managed 18 shots on goal in the third, and although having several quality tries on Beauchemin, were caught as Mike Walsh sent home an empty netter at the 18:46 mark of regulation for the 4-2 final score. Dayton managed 7 shots in the period, and trailed Johnstown in total shots 39-33.
The win, Dayton's second inside the comfy confines of Troy's Hobart Arena also marked the second win this season against the Chiefs in Troy. Dayton improves its record to 23-19-5-5 for 56 points.
Dayton now hits the road for an extended South division tour before returning home to the Nutter Center in March.
