Checkers stopped in shootout by Everblades, lose 3-2

Charlotte, N.C. - A record setting crowd of 12,256 saw the Charlotte Checkers fall to the Florida Everblades by a score of 3-2 in a shootout.

It didn't take long for the Everblades to strike during the initial stanza. Florida forward, Mathieu Melanson fired a shot from the right wing side that flew past Checkers netminder, Mike Ayers at 2:23 putting the Everblades up, 1-0.

Florida would extend their lead by a goal when a point shot by defenseman, Brett Peterson found its way through traffic and behind Ayers at 1:55. Charlotte would finally get on the board when Mike Bayrack fought past the defense of Florida and blasted a shot on net that fooled Everblades goalie, David Schantz at 16:36 cutting the Everblades lead to 2-1.

Mark Lee's point shot during a Checkers power-play tied the game at 2-2 at 11:15 in the third period. The teams headed to overtime where neither team could score a game-winning goal. This resulted in a shootout.

During the shootout, Florida received goals from Melanson and Ernie Hartlieb but the Checkers Chris Capraro was the only one who scored for his team resulting in a 3-2 victory for the Everblades.

Notes: Ayers turned aside 28 of 30 shots while Schantz stopped 30 of 32...Charlotte scored once on six power play chances. Florida couldn't score on their two attempts.

The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on March 4. against the Gwinnett Gladiators. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date.
