Boron stops 39 to lift Thunder to second consecutive victory

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Goaltender Tim Boron made 39 saves to help the Stockton Thunder (21-29-3, 45 points) jump into seventh place in the National Conference with a 5-2 victory over the Bakersfield Condors in front of 6,648 at Rabobank Arena on Saturday night.

The Thunder raced out to a 2-1 advantage through 20 minutes, ignited by two goals in a span of 24 seconds beginning with David Rohlfs' 12th goal of the season at the 7:06 mark of the first period when he tipped Tim O'Connell's blast from the left point past Bakersfield goaltender Yutaka Fukufuji while setting a screen. Geoff Paukovich then lifted the Thunder to a 2-0 with his 13th goal of the season, completing a give-and-go play with Adam Huxley's pass in the slot.

Brett Lutes's 15th goal of the season cut the Thunder advantage to 2-1 at the 14:40, finishing a one-timer in the slot past the five-hole of Thunder goalie Tim Boron.

Veteran Tim Verbeek's third goal of the season and 100th of his professional career hiked the Thunder lead to 3-1 with 2:27 gone in the second period, finishing a give-and-go play with Paukovich's pass from the left side boards. Verbeek buried a one-timer from the slot to finish the goal.

Brandon Schwartz's 12th goal of the season expanded the Thunder lead to 4-1 with 6:57 left on the team's 10th shorthanded goal of the year, taking a drop pass from Rohlfs at the right wing, cut down the slot on Fukufuji and buried a wrist shot from in tight.

Boron stopped 17 shots from Bakersfield in the second period to preserve the Thunder lead.

Bakersfield's Eric Sonnenberg and the Thunder's Tom Zanoski traded third period goals.
