Cyclones Defense Is Offensive In 5-2 Win
March 24, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
TRENTON, New Jersey - The Cincinnati Cyclones defense was downright offensive on Saturday night and the result was a 5-2 win over the Trenton Titans before 5435 fans at the Sovereign Bank Arena. Second period goals from defensemen Conrad Martin and Chad Starling broke a 2-2 deadlock and put the club on the verge of its first playoff berth in four years.
The Cyclones opened the scoring 5:14 into the first period, when off a faceoff, Barett Ehgoetz collected his 16th goal of the season. On the draw, Ehgoetz attempted to push the puck into the Trenton zone, when the disk bounced off a Titans stick between the legs of a surprised goaltender, Gregg Naumenko. Thirty seconds later, at 5:44, Mike Wirll netted his league-leading 43rd goal over the left shoulder of Naumenko to take a 2-0 edge. Brian Mullally and Ehgoetz picked up the assists.
Before the frame ended, Scott Bertoli added his 23rd score of the campaign at 9:47 on the power play to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. Late in the frame, Travis Lisabeth nearly gave Cincinnati a 3-1 lead, but his shot bounced off a crossbar and despite being outshot, 12-10, by Trenton, Cincinnati held a 2-1 edge after 20 minutes.
Trenton knotted the score at 2-2, 9:14 into the second period when Tony Zancanaro netted his first pro goal. Cincinnati re-established the lead when Conrad Martin tallied his second score of the year at 12:12. Martin crashed the net while the Cyclones were on the power play and took a rebound and fired it past the outstretched Naumenko, with Travis Lisabeth and Mike Wirll adding the assists. The lead extended to 4-2 for the Cyclones, when Chad Starling jumped into the play and took a backdoor feed from Jean-Michel Daoust and Lisabeth to collect his fourth score of the year. The shots favored Cincinnati, 15-10, in the middle frame.
An empty net goal with 58 seconds remaining by rookie Mathieu Aubin closed the scoring in the 5-2 win. Cedrick Desjardins stopped 31 shots in collecting his 22nd win of the season.
The Cyclones are now 35-24-3-2, tied with Dayton for the North Division lead. Trenton is 31-29-1-4 on the season, fourth-best in the North Division. The Cyclones battle Trenton again Sunday afternoon (March 25-4pm), before heading back home to host the âEducation In Hockey Day' against Johnstown on Tuesday (March 27) at 10:30am.
