Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID - Steelheads' forwards Marty Flichel (2g, 1a) and Derek Nesbitt (1g, 2a) each posted three points, as the Steelheads downed the Alaska Aces, 4-2, in front of a sold out crowd of 5,142 on Saturday night at Qwest Arena.
With the victory, the Steelheads (37-24-2-3) took four of a possible six points in the three-game series, as they conclude their season series with the Aces (46-15-2-4) at 3-3-0-0.
For the third straight game the Aces opened the scoring, on Justin Bourne's power play tally at 5:04 of the opening stanza. Flichel tried to clear the puck out of his defensive zone, but his attempt hit the skates of Aces' forward Matt Robinson and caromed to Bourne, who was wide open in the slot. The rookie's quick snap shot beat Steelheads' goaltender Steve Silverthorn (26 saves) inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.
At 9:35 the Steelheads tied the contest off a give-and-go play by Taggart Desmet and B.J. Crombeen. On the even-strength goal, Desmet rolled out to the top of the left circles and dropped the puck off for Crombeen who used a quick release to fire the puck between the legs of Aces' goaltender Isaac Reichmuth (23 saves).
In the final minute of the first period the Steelheads took their first lead on a shot from the slot by Flichel. Nesbitt and Kory Scoran drew the helpers on Flichel's first of the night.
Just 19 seconds into the second period the Aces tied the game on defenseman Corbin Schmidt's third goal of the series and his ninth of the season. Robinson was able to get to a loose puck in the Steelheads' zone and he found Schmidt skating in at the left circles, where he was able to beat Silverthorn to even the score at two.
Midway through the stanza Flichel buried his second of the night and 37th of the season with Nesbitt and Blake Forsyth gathering the helpers at 13:10. While shorthanded, Nesbitt worked the puck over to Flichel who wristed a shot past Reichmuth for the club's sixth shorthanded goal and Flichel's second on the man disadvantage this season. Just over two minutes later, the Steelheads struck again, as this time Nesbitt took Flichel's pass and buried a shot from the right circles for a 4-2 lead at the 15:29 mark.
There was no scoring in the third period, as the final shots were 28-27 in favor of the Aces. The visitors ended one-for-five on the power play, while the Steelheads finished zero-for-three. With the win, Silverthorn now has 32 on the season, which leads the ECHL, while Reichmuth lost for the first time in his last nine outings.
