Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Marty Flichel and Derek Nesbitt each had three points as Idaho sent Alaska home from an 11-day road trip at 2-2-2 after a 4-2 setback before 5, 142 Saturday at Qwest Arena.
For the fifth time in six games against the Steelheads this year, Alaska registered the game's first goal, as Justin Bourne capitalized on a turnover by Flichel and whipped a loose puck past goalie Steve Silverthorn at 5:04 of the opening frame. B.J. Crombeen answered four and a half minutes later, beating Aces starter Isaac Reichmuth (23 saves) five-hole to tie the game 1-1. Flichel atoned for his earlier miscue and gave Idaho its first lead of the series off the rush with 42.6 seconds left in the period.
Alaska captain Mike Scott set up Corbin Schmidt for the equalizer just 19 seconds into the second period, and the Aces had two subsequent chances on the power play to regain the lead. But on the second of those, Flichel scored his second goal of the game shorthanded at 13:10, and two and a half minutes later, set up Nesbitt to push Idaho's lead to 4-2. Silverthorn shut Alaska out from that point, finishing with 26 saves as the Steelheads beat the Aces for the first time in regulation this season and dealt Alaska just its second loss in 17 games.
Reichmuth absorbed his first defeat since January 21, ending a streak of eight unbeaten starts (5-0-3). Newly signed Jason Bloomingburg, a rookie out of NCAA Division I Wayne State, where he set the single-season school record with 20 goals as a sophomore in 2005, made his pro debut and fired five shots on goal.
The Aces (46-15-6) fly home to Anchorage tomorrow, but their stay will be a brief one, as Thursday the team will depart for a critical two-game series in Las Vegas against the Wranglers Friday and Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. ADT. Alaska's final regular season games will be played at Sullivan Arena against Utah, a three-game set beginning April 4 at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are now available at participating Fred Meyer locations or by logging onto www.alaskaaces.com. Tickets for the 2007 Kelly Cup playoffs go on sale to the general public on Monday.
