Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH- The Bombers played a tough game in front of 5,341 at the E.J. Nutter Center. Last night the Dayton Bombers came out firing with the knowledge that first place was on the line. Tonight, the Bombers had a chance to be the first team in the American Conference to clinch a playoff spot. However, Johnstown is still playing for a playoff spot as well and was not going to go quietly.
The first period was even with both teams aggressively forechecking and taking the body. The game remained scoreless until the 7:36 mark when Johnstown's Maxime Boisclair (17) ripped a snap shot above Bombers' goaltender Terry Denike ( 24 saves, SOL). The Chiefs held the lead until the 12:26 mark when captain Greg Labenski found assistant captain Paul Kelly who put a shot on Chiefs' netminder Ryan Munce (45 saves, Win). The puck trickled out to the corner and Joe Cullen (11) was in the right place at the right time to drive the puck home. The period would end 1-1.
The second period started with the Bombers controlling both ends of the ice with numerous scoring opportunities. However, the period ended scoreless for both teams although the Bombers were out shooting the Chiefs 32-18.
The third period continued even until the 2:16 mark when a puck took a funny bounce and redirected into the Bombers' net. Radek Smolenak (14) took credit for the Johnstown goal. The Bombers continued to pour on the offense but couldn't put anything past Munce. It took until the 14:23 mark when Matt Herneisen (16) made a stop-and-go move past Munce for the equalizer. Neither team was able to record another goal in the game and both teams ended regulation in a
2-2 tie.
The overtime session would also end in a 2-2 tie. The shootout saw more great goaltending from both teams. It took until the sixth shooter, Zbynek Hrdel, to put a backhand shot over Denike's shoulder.
The shootout loss gives the Bombers enough points (75 pts.) to remain in first place over the Cincinnati Cyclones (75 pts.) in the North Division via their winning percentage (Dayton .595, Cincinnati .586).
The Bombers return to the Nutter Center to take on the Wheeling Nailers on Tuesday, March 27, at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday's game will be another "Two for Tuesday's" sponsored by Prestige Ford. All Silver Level tickets will be available 2 for 1 at the Nutter Center box office and all popcorn, pretzels and hot dogs are 2 for 1 at the concession stands.
