Cutters superb all-around in sweep of Scrappers
August 8, 2012 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
Ulises Joaquin was stout, the Cutter defense solid and the bats clutch to shut out the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 6-0 Wednesday night.
The win gives the Crosscutters their first sweep of the season as Williamsport took both games in Niles, Ohio.
Chace Numata hit his first home run of the season as the Crosscutters have hit four homers in their last five games. Cameron Perkins had two RBI-doubles. All of them came with two outs as Williamsport hit 6-for-16 (.375) with two outs and scored all but one run in two-out situations.
Joaquin pitched five scoreless innings, allowed just three hits and picked up his first win in arguably his best start of the season.
Williamsport took the lead in the second inning on a two-out two-run single by Gustavo Gonzalez.
In the fourth inning, Yan Carlos Olmo led off with a triple to left, but was injured on the play and replaced by Kevin Quaranto. Walding promptly delivered with a sac fly to score Quaranto and give the Cutters a 3-0 lead. Quaranto, the team's backup catcher, would stay in the game to play left field due to Larry Greene's unavailability with a sore hamstring.
Perkins hit the first of his RBI-doubles in the fifth inning, plating Kyle Hoppy from first base to up the Cutter lead to 4-0.
Numata's homer came with two outs in the sixth off of Robbie Aviles. He lined a pitch to deep right-center to put Williamsport ahead 5-0.
The Cutters would take a 6-0 lead on another Perkins double in the seventh and carry the win to the finish line.
Scrapper starter Luis DeJesus was named the All-Star starter before the game, and had not allowed more than two runs in any start this season. But the Cutters burned him with two outs and put up four runs in five innings on DeJesus.
Williamsport will try to keep the good fortune going in Jamestown. First pitch against the Jammers is at 7:05. Every Cutters game can be heard on ESPN Radio 104.1 FM, ESPN 1050 AM, or online at crosscutters.com.WP- Ulises Joaquin (1-1, 3.81)
