
Four IronBirds Headed to All-Star Game

Aberdeen, MD- Earlier today, four IronBirds were named to the New York-Penn League All-Star Game; OF Lucas Herbst, SS Joel Hutter, C Sam Kimmel, and 1B Christian Walker. The quartet will play for the American League All-Stars on Tuesday, August 14th at Eastwood Field in Niles, OH; the home of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
Herbst was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 26th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of Santa Clara University. Herbst currently leads the IronBirds with a .476 slugging percentage and is tied for team-lead with four triples on the year. The Monterrey, CA native is currently on a nine-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games. Herbst finished his senior season at Santa Clara with a .356 batting average and led the team in slugging percentage (.490). Following his final collegiate season, he was named honorable mention All-West Coast Conference.
Hutter was selected in the 10th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Orioles organization. Hutter is currently leading the IronBirds in batting average (.311), hits (47), and doubles (11). Hutter's .311 batting average is ninth-best in the New York-Penn League. The Davenport, Iowa native is currently on a ten-game hitting streak and has reached base in 20 consecutive contests. This past spring at Dallas Baptist University, Hutter started all 60 games for the Patriots and led the team with 72 RBI.
Kimmel was drafted in the 18th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Kimmel is currently hitting .274 with 10 RBI, 11 runs and seven stolen bases. In his only season at Stetson (FL) University, Kimmel earned Second Team All-Atlantic Sun honors and finished with the team's second best batting average at .326. Hailing from West Palm Beach, FL, Kimmel attended Indian River State (FL) College prior to Stetson.
Selected by the Orioles in the fourth round of the 2012 MLB Draft, Walker is the highest drafted position player from this June's First-Year Player Draft on the IronBirds roster. Currently in Aberdeen, Walker has a .284 batting average with five doubles, two home runs, and nine RBI. The Limerick, PA native blasted his first professional home run on July 16th against the Batavia Muckdogs. In his college days, Walker helped guide South Carolina to back-to-back National Championships in 2010 and 2011. This past year, Walker led the Gamecocks in most offensive categories including batting average, home runs, RBI, doubles, and slugging percentage. Walker was a First-Team All-SEC selection and named to the Golden Spikes Award Watch List in 2012.
