Tigers Four Game Winning Streak Over

NORWICH-The Staten Island Yankees (16-33) ended an 11-game losing streak by winning 3-2 against the Connecticut Tigers (22-27) on Wednesday Night in front of a crowd of 1,408 at Dodd Stadium.

Starting pitcher RHP Derek Varnadore (2-3) shut down 15 of the 16 batters he faced to pick up his second win of the season. He pitched five innings and allowed one hit in the fourth inning.

The Yankees got on the scoreboard in the second inning. They hit back-to-back homeruns off of Connecticut Tigers starting RHP Tim Kelley (0-2). CF Ravel Santana (1-3) blasted a 3-1 pitch over the left field wall and on the very next pitch from Kelley, C Peter O'Brien (2-4) belted a shot to straight away center field for an early 2-0 lead. The home run just cleared the outstretched glove of Tigers CF Jake Stewart.

Kelley gave up three straight hits to the Yankees in the third inning. 2B Jose Rosario (2-4) singled to start things off and stole second base. He advanced to third base on a single by LF Taylor Dugas (2-4).

SS Claudio Custodio (2-4) followed by lining a double over LF Danry Vasquez's head to score Rosario (2-4) for a 3-0 lead.

Kelley tossed three innings and gave up three runs, all earned, on five hits with one strike out.

The Tigers broke through in the sixth inning with a pair of runs. DH Charlie Neil (1-2) reached on a single with one out in the inning. SS Jered Reaves (2-4) singled to left field as Neil was moving on the pitch. Dugas over threw 3B Fu-Lin Kuo and allowed Neil to score to cut the lead down to 3-1.

Reaves moved to third base on the play. LF Danry Vasquez (1-4) grounded out to score Reaves and make it 3-2.

The Tigers and Yankees finish their series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Tomorrow is "Thirsty Thursday Happy Hour" so come to the ball park an hour early as gates open at 5 p.m. with drink specials and live music at "The Hole in The Wall Bar," located on the concourse at Dodd Stadium. Tomorrow is also "Olympics Night" made possible by Champion Sports & Awards in Groton. Fans will have a chance to earn a replica medal in addition to the regular prizes during between-inning promotions. Staten Island will send LHP Tim Flight (1-4, 6.10 ERA) to the mound while the Tigers will send RHP Edgar De La Rosa (3-2, 3.95 ERA) to the hill.
