Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - In a game that took just two hours and four minutes, the Lowell Spinners pitching staff held the Brooklyn Cyclones in check throughout the night, as Mike Augliera, Francisco Taveras and Yunior Ortega combined to allow just four hits in a convincing 4-1 win Wednesday night at LeLacheur Park.
Lowell (22-28) got on the board in the second inning taking advantage of the Cyclones throwing the ball around a bit. Mookie Betts reached on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning, stealing second with one out. Aneury Tavarez followed with a single through the hole at shortstop and though Betts held at third, the throw home sailed over the catcher, which was backed up by Brooklyn starter Luis Mateo. Mateo attempted to catch Betts off the bag at third, but his throw sailed into left field allowing Betts and Tavarez, all the way from first, to come around to score, giving the Spinners a 2-0 lead.
The Spinners added to the lead in the sixth inning, with Tavarez again the central figure in the scoring. Jake Davies started things off with a one-out single, advancing to second on a single by Matt Marquis. Tavarez followed with a single off the base of the leftfield wall, clearing the bases to give the Spinners a 4-0 lead.
Brooklyn (31-19) broke through for a run in the seventh inning, capitalizing on a pair of Lowell errors. Jeff Glenn reached with one out on a throwing error by Dreily Guerrero, advancing to second when the throw skipped past Davies. Julio Concepcion followed with a deep fly down the right field line that Kendrick Perkins appeared to have a beat on, but dropped in the corner, advancing Glenn to third and Jeff Reynolds followed with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-1.
Spinners' pitchers handled the rest, as Francisco Taveras and Yunior Ortega finished out the win.
Augliera continued his run of zeroes, throwing three scoreless innings, allowing three hits, striking out two. He has now thrown 12 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Taveras, who was named a New York-Penn League All-Star Tuesday morning, followed with 5.2 innings, allowing just the unearned run, striking out three while allowing just one hit. With two outs in the ninth, Taveras hit his pitch count, leading to Yunior Ortega picking up the save, striking out the only batter he faced.
Player of the Game Tavarez and Mike Miller each picked up two hits, with Tavarez picking up the two Spinner RBIs. Guerrero, also named to the All-Star Game, picked up a hit and stole a base, while Miller also added two stolen bases.
The Spinners' look to win their fifth consecutive series Thursday night on Dustin Pedroia "Super Pedroia" Bobble Head Giveaway with Post-Game Fireworks. Brian Johnson (0-0, 0.00) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
