WAPPINGERS FALLS: The Hudson Valley Renegades turned in a terrific comeback performance Tuesday night against the Vermont Lake Monsters for a 7-5 win in front of 3,659 fans at Dutchess Stadium. The Renegades (33-16) picked up their fourth straight win and ninth in their last ten games, erasing a five-run lead by the Lake Monsters (24-25) and stopping Vermont's five-game winning streak.
The Lake Monsters opened the scoring in the top of the second against Renegades starter Sean Bierman. Leadoff man John Wooten struck out swinging, but reached first when Bierman's wild pitch got away from catcher Luke Maile. A one-out ground ball single by Wilfredo Solano moved Wooten to second, and Diomedes Lopez singled him home to give Vermont an early 1-0 lead.
The visitors extended their lead in the next inning. With two outs, Christopher Bostick singled through the middle, and Wooten singled him to second. Miguel Marte smashed a double to right field that brought home both runners and stretched Vermont's lead to 3-0.
The Lake Monsters grew their advantage in the fourth inning. Reynaldo Mateo and Kelvin Rojas hit back-to-back singles with one out to bring up Addison Russell. The 18-year-old shortstop singled into right field, and Deshun Dixon's throw to the infield was errant, allowing Mateo to score. Brett Vertigan lined a single to center to score Rojas, and the Lake Monsters exited the fourth with a 5-0 advantage.
Hudson Valley cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, first baseman Michael Williams slashed a double to left-center field off Vermont starter Brent Powers, who gave way to Nate Eppley. Center fielder Joey Rickard bounced a ball to Russell at shortstop, and Russell's throw pulled first baseman Miguel Marte off the bag. Rickard reached safely, and Williams moved to third on the play. Eppley hit second baseman Tommy Coyle in the hip with a fastball to load the bases. Designated hitter Richie Shaffer drew an RBI walk, and the Renegades got back-to-back-to-back singles from Maile, shortstop Ryan Dunn and third baseman Leonardo Reginatto brought the Renegades to within one run. But with the bases loaded and one out, the 'Gades couldn't add any more, and trailed 5-4 leaving the fifth inning.
The Renegades took the lead for good in the eighth. Dixon led off with a triple against Vermont reliever Stuart Pudenz (2-1), and Williams singled him home for the tying run. Joel Caminero was inserted as a pinch-runner for Williams, and Tommy Coyle drew a one-out walk to put runners on first and second. With two outs, Maile pounded his own triple off the left-field wall to score both runners and give the 'Gades their final 7-5 lead.
Bierman allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits over five innings; he set a new season-high for Renegades pitchers with eight strikeouts. Brandon Henderson tossed two scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and striking out one. Dylan Floro (4-1) earned the win with two perfect frames, fanning four. The Renegades set a new season-best with 13 combined strikeouts.
Powers allowed a run on four hits and a walk over 4.1 innings, whiffing six. Eppley coughed up three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk while recording only two outs, one of them a strikeout. Omar Duran threw two excellent innings of relief, walking two and striking out four. Pudenz took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk against a strikeout in his lone inning of work.
The Renegades and Lake Monsters will tangle again Wednesday, with Taylor Guerrieri starting for Hudson Valley against Vermont righty Nolan Sanburn. It's "What's In the Bag - Night!
