Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

FISHKILL, NY ---  Richie Shaffer accounted for both Hudson Valley runs with a solo homer in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth, while three Renegade pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout in a 2-0 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters Wednesday night at Dutchess Stadium,

The game was scoreless until two outs in the bottom of the fourth when Shaffer lined a 2-2 pitch from Vermont reliever J.C. Menna over the leftfield fence for his first home run of the season. Then in the sixth with two outs and no one on, the Renegades put together three straight singles from Justin O'Connor, Tommy Coyle and Shaffer for a 2-0 lead.

Those three singles and the Shaffer home run were the only hits of the night for Hudson Valley as a trio of Lake Monster pitchers combined to allow four hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Starter Nolan Sanburn, making his second professional start, walked one and struckout three in three hitless innings as retired nine of 10 batters faced. Reliever Tucker Healy walked one and struckout two as he retired seven of eight batters faced in 2 1/3 hitless innings.

But the Vermont offense could put together just five hits and had two runners on base in the same inning just once with back-to-back two-out walks in the sixth inning. The shutout was the sixth of the season against the Lake Monsters, the most for a Vermont team since they were blanked seven times during the 2006 season.  It was also the second 2-0 loss in last six games (August 3rd vs. Mahoning Valley).

John Wooten, one of four Lake Monsters selected to the NY-Penn League All-Star Game earlier in the day, was 2-for-3 with a double.  Menna (0-6) allowed two runs on four hits over 2 2/3 innings to suffer his sixth loss of the season and his Vermont record 13th career defeat (2-7 during 2011 season).

The Lake Monsters will look to salvage one game in the three-game series at Hudson Valley on Thursday night before heading to Brooklyn for a three-game series against the Cyclones Friday-Sunday. After two days off for the All-Star Game, Vermont (24-26) begins a six-game homestand on August 15th.
