Altoona Curve News Release
Richmond, VA - The Altoona Curve's winning streak came to an abrupt halt on Monday night as the surging Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA - San Francisco) thumped Altoona 9-5 at The Diamond.
The Squirrels won their seventh straight game while they tagged the Altoona Curve pitching staff for a season-high 13 hits in the game.
Richmond (15-9) jumped out to a 2-0 edge early off of Curve starter Tim Alderson, who lasted 5.0 innings and permitted five runs on nine hits while striking out a season-high eight batters. The Curve (16-7) would chip away with single runs both in the second and third innings to tie the contest, 2-2.
After Richmond pulled away with three more runs to take a 5-2 edge, Altoona would once again battle back in the top of the sixth. Pinch-hitter Jim Negrych would smack a three-run triple to once again tie the contest, 5-5, but that is as close as the Curve would get.
Richmond would plate four answered runs off of reliever Dustin Molleken, who was tagged with the loss. Molleken surrendered three runs in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth on an inside-the-park home run by Nick Noonan, who circled the bases after center fielder Gorkys Hernandez and left fielder Jose de los Santos collided in the outfield and laid motionless for a few minutes. Both players left the game under their own power. No further information is currently available.
Alex Presley (2-for-4) extended his hitting streak to 17 games and is one game shy of tying Adam Hyzdu (1999) and Nate McLouth (2004) for the second longest hitting streak in franchise history.
Altoona will turn the ball over to LHP Rudy Owens (2-0, 3.57) in the second game of the series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Richmond counters with southpaw Craig Clark (1-1, 3.20). Radio coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on flagship station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates.
