Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the week ending May 2nd:
Erie SeaWolves outfielder Wilkin Ramirez has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending May 2nd . The 6'2-Â, 190 lb. slugger played in six games for the SeaWolves last week, batting .500 (11-for-22) with two doubles, three home runs, nine RBI, eight runs scored, five walks and a 1.000 slugging percentage. The Bani, Dominican Republic native had five multiple hit games last week, including going 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs, five RBI and four runs scored in a 10-4 win over the visiting Trenton Thunder on Saturday night. Ramirez led all Eastern League batters in hits (11), total bases (22), slugging percentage (1.000) and OPS (1.593) last week. He also ranked among the weekly leaders in runs scored (8-tied 1st ), home runs (3-2nd ), batting average (.500-tied 2nd ), extra-base hits (5-tied 2nd ), on-base percentage (.593-3rd ) and RBI (9-tied 3rd ). The 24-year old is batting .291 in 22 games with the SeaWolves this season and currently leads the league in total bases (49), is tied for first in home runs (6), ranked third in RBI (19) and tied for fourth in extra-base hits (11). Wilkin, who was an outfielder on the Eastern League All-Star Team while playing with Erie in 2008, was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on February 5, 2003.
Daryl Maday, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 2nd . The 24-year old made a pair of starts for the Flying Squirrels last week and had a record of 2-0 with seven strikeouts and a 1.54 ERA in 11.2 innings pitched. The Bristol, Wisconsin native made his first start of the week in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday night at New Britain and earned the win after allowing just one run on three hits and two walks while striking out two batters in 5.2 innings of work. The 6'2-Â, 225 lb. hurler made his second start of the week on Sunday afternoon against Bowie and gave up one run over six innings in a 4-1 Richmond victory to earn his second win of the week. He was able to work around nine hits and one walk while matching his season-high with five strikeouts. Maday has allowed two runs or less in each of his five starts this season and is currently tied for first in the league in wins (4) and ranked second in ERA (1.19). Daryl, who had a record of 6-6 with a 4.25 ERA in 25 starts with the Connecticut Defenders last season, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 30th round of the 2006 draft out of the University of Arkansas.
