Egan Stands Tall in Harrisburg

Bowie Baysox News Release

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Bowie Baysox snapped their longest losing streak in eight years on Monday with a come-from-behind 5-3 win over the Harrisburg Senators. The win jumped Bowie back into third place, four games behind Altoona in the Eastern League's Western Division after an eight-game losing streak sent them crashing from first to fourth in the six-team division.

Baysox starter Tim Bascom was solid with three runs off six hits, but had the misfortune of being matched up against Harrisburg lefty Matt Chico, who rolled through the first 14 batters the Baysox sent to the plate.

The game ended up a bullpen battle, as Bowie's 6-foot-7-inch hurler Pat Egan got the win and continued to make his claim as one of the top relievers in the Eastern League, finishing with his ERA down to a paltry 0.55 through 16.1 innings this year.

Harrisburg's Jesus Valdez opened the second inning with a long drive over the left field wall to put the Senators in front 1-0. It was a bad omen for the Baysox, who had given up the first run in all eight games of their losing streak and faced the same circumstance once more. Unfazed, Bascom retired the next three batters to get out of the inning.

Bascom worked through three more Senators hitters in the third but walked shortstop Danny Espinosa to open the fourth frame. Espinosa stole second base and made it to home on Valdez's one-out single to right-center to make it 2-0.

Meanwhile, the Baysox weren't having any success digging out of the modest deficit. Chico didn't allow a single baserunner until two outs into the fifth inning, when Danny Figueroa knocked a single into center field. Figueroa made it to second on a Chico balk, but got no further as Miguel Abreu flied out to right field.

Harrisburg added one more run in the bottom of the fifth. Ofilio Castro singled to left center and moved to third when second baseman Pedro Lopez picked up a single. Senators outfielder Michael Daniel grounded out to third baseman Brandon Waring, but Castro was able to score on the play to put the Baysox in a three-run hole.

That was as far as the Senators would get. Bowie started fighting back in the sixth inning, as catcher Caleb Joseph led off with a double to left field, his fifth extra-base hit of the year. He advanced to second on shortstop Pedro Florimon's groundout and scored when designated hitter Paco Figueroa grounded to third for the second out. Ryan Adams reached first with a ball to left field before Tyler Henson lined out to second to end the inning down 3-1.

First baseman Joel Guzman hit a one-out double to left field in the seventh stanza and it was the last pitch that Chico would throw. The Baysox immediately capitalized on the pitching change as reliever Rafael Martin started out by walking Danny Figueroa. Right fielder Miguel Abreu hit a ground ball to shortstop that plated Guzman as Figueroa was forced out at second. After getting Figueroa, Harrisburg's Lopez tried to turn the double play but sent the ball high over the head of first baseman Chris Marrero and out of play to advance Abreu another base. Two batters later, Florimon sent a grounder into left field that brought Abreu across the plate from second for the tying run.

With the game tied 3-3 and Bascom off the hook, Bowie brought in towering reliever Pat Egan to hold off the Senators. Egan, who has allowed just one run this year, continued his dominant form by retiring the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.

The Baysox kept attacking Harrisburg's bullpen in the eighth inning, as they brought in Adam Carr, who gave up a one-out single to Henson. Carr then hit Waring to put runners at first and second for Guzman's double to left field that sent Henson in on the go-ahead run. Carr walked Danny Figueroa to load the bases and was promptly given the hook by manager Randy Knorr in favor of Erik Arnesen. Waring scored an insurance run as Miguel Abreu kept the bags loaded by reaching base on Lopez's second throwing error of the game. The inning finally ended as Caleb Joseph grounded to third for an around-the-horn double play with the Baysox up 5-3 -- their first lead since the fourth inning of their 8-6 loss to Akron that started the eight-game skid.

Egan closed out the game by shutting down the Senators. A hit batter in the eighth and a one-out single by Bill Rhinehart in the bottom of the ninth were the only runners to reach base on his watch as he notched his second win of the season.

The Baysox take on Harrisburg again in game two at Metro Bank Park Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Their 10-day road trip continues to Trenton on Friday before the team returns to Prince George's Stadium on Monday, May 10 to open a series against the Flying Squirrels.
