Altoona Curve News Release
AKRON, Ohio - A two-run bottom of the eighth inning by the Akron Aeros ended up sinking the Altoona Curve on Wednesday night as the Curve fell, 4-2, to the Aeros at Canal Park. It is the first time this year that Altoona has been swept and they finish the road trip with a 2-5 record.
In the closest game of the series thus far, Altoona tied the game at two in the top of the sixth inning with a one-out RBI double by Jordy Mercer. The game stayed tied until the eighth when the Aeros rallied for two runs off reliever Ramon Aguero.
The hard-throwing Aguero retired the first two men in the inning with ease for the first two outs of the inning but then allowed a triple to center field by Beau Mills. With Mills on third, Aguero walked Carlos Rivero and Jerad Head to load the bases. Damaso Espino drove in the go-ahead run with a single to left field that scored Mills. With the bases still loaded, Aguero walked the next man, Tim Fedroff, to walk in a run and make it, 4-2, Akron. Corey Hamman was summoned out of the bullpen to record the final out.
Curve starter Jeff Locke pitched well in his second career Double-A start. The North Conway, N.H. native allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings with three strikeouts to take a no decision. Dustin Molleken worked a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts.
Altoona initially led the game when they scored a first-inning run off starter Paolo Espino. Chase d'Arnaud tripled to start the game and came around when Gorkys Hernandez put down a bunt to bring him home and give the Curve a, 1-0, lead.
The lead lasted until the bottom of the second when Head homered off Locke with one on to give Akron the one-run lead at, 2-1.
Matt Hague, Mercer and d'Arnaud all collected two hits apiece for Altoona in the loss.
Altoona (57-39) returns home to Blair County Ballpark at 7 p.m. on Thursday night to take on the Trenton Thunder (57-40). All-Star RHP Derek Hankins (5-1, 1.46) will make the start for Altoona looking to end the four-game losing streak while Trenton counters with RHP Adam Warren (1-0, 1.80).
