New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
David Cooper led the Fisher Cats offensive attack, going 2 for 3, but it was not enough in a 5-1 loss to Portland Wednesday night in front of 7,644 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium in Manchester.
The largest Fisher Cats crowd of the season also saw Travis Snider hit his third home run in four games. It was the only run New Hampshire (57-41) scored in the contest, and it came in the top of the fourth inning to cut Portland's lead to 3-1.
The Sea Dogs (49-48) scored first in all three games this series. In the finale, the Sea Dogs went up 2-0 in the top of the second when the future Red Sox loaded them up with nobody out. Ryan Lavarnway (2-for-4, 2 RBI) broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single, before losing pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes (1-1) minimized the damage by trading two outs for another run by inducing a 4-6-3 double play. Reyes got out of the jam by recording the third out on a strikeout to No. 9 hitter Ryan Khoury.
The Sea Dogs missed another opportunity by only plating one run in the top of the fourth. This time with runners on second and third with no out, Lavarnway recorded an RBI fielder's choice when his ground ball was fielded by Adeiny Hechavarria at shortstop and tossed to third to get the runner trying to advance. Reyes then induced a 3-6-3 double play to get back in the dugout only down 3-0.
New Hampshire (57-41) made it 3-1 on the Snider home run, but Portland answered right back in the top of the fifth, however, gaining the 4-1 advantage when Che-Hsuan Lin hit a one-out triple before coming home on a fielder's choice.
After working a scoreless sixth, Jo-Jo Reyes (1-1, 2.57) gave way to the bullpen. The reigning Eastern League pitcher of the Week, and eventual loser, finished the night after six innings pitched, allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two.
Danny Farquhar pitched two scoreless innings of relief for New Hampshire before Adrian Martin surrendered a run in the top of the ninth on three consecutive singles to bring the score to 5-1.
Sea Dogs starter Casey Kelly (3-4, 4.85) earned the win after hurling six innings as well. The Red Sox top prospect gave up one run on six hits, while striking out eight Fisher Cats and walking one.
New Hampshire will now travel to New Britain to take on the Rock Cats for a four-game series. RHP Kyle Drabek (9-9, 3.23) opens the series Thursday night at 7:05pm against Rock Cats RHP Deolis Guerra (2-5, 4.18). Radio coverage can be heard with Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network at 6:45 p.m.
The Fisher Cats are back in town to host the Harrisburg Senators at Merchantsauto.com Stadium from July 26-28. The first 1,000 kids will receive a free batting glove, courtesy of Northeast Delta Dental and fans can play USA Subs Baseball Bingo. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
