EL1 Harrisburg Senators

Senators Score Second Straight Shutout

July 21, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release

Ross Detwiler threw seven shutout innings, and Marvin Lowrance's two-run home run in the second inning proved to be all the scoring the Harrisburg Senators would need, as they beat the New Britain Rock Cats on Wednesday afternoon at Metro Bank Park, 2-0. It was the second straight day in which the Sens beat the Rock Cats by that 2-0 final, and the win gave them a three-game sweep in the series.

Detwiler (2-2) turned in his best outing of the year for the Sens, allowing just five hits and one walk in his seven innings, and striking out seven. It was his longest outing of the season by two full innings. Mike McCardell (0-11) of New Britain took the loss, despite allowing just two runs in five and two-thirds innings. Cole Kimball pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the year.

Lowrance homered off of McCardell with no outs in the second, driving in Jesus Valdez with a blast that just cleared the right-field fence. The Senators did not score again, despite seven total hits in the game. Valdez had two this, while Lowrance, Danny Espinosa, Chris Marrero, Jhonatan Solano, and Ofilio Castro each added one. Jair Fernandez had two hits in defeat for the Rock Cats, who are now a league-worst 28-70.

The win brings the Senators record to 49-49 on the season, which is their first .500 record since they were 28-28 back on June 5th. They finished the seven-game homestand at 5-2, and now take to the road for seven games. The first of the seven is a 7 PM start at Portland, with LHP John Lannan (1-2, 4.11) on the mound for the Sens. Right-hander Alex Wilson (2-2, 5.89) starts for the Sea Dogs. Fans can hear all the action, starting with the pregame show at 6:45 PM, by tuning in to 1460 AM The Ticket and www.senatorsbaseball.com.
