B-Mets Swept by Baysox, 6-5

Binghamton mounted a feverish ninth-inning rally plating a pair of runs, but fell a run short in the end as Bowie slipped past the B-Mets 6-5 at Prince George's Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The loss gave the Baysox a three-game sweep and dropped Binghamton to its fourth straight loss. Robert Carson pitched well enough to win, tossing 6 2/3 innings of six-hit work.

Bob McCrory came out of the Bowie bullpen for the ninth and put the first three hitters on base courtesy of a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. With the bases juiced, Jose Coronado hit an RBI fielder's choice to short, plating a run. Brahiam Maldonado followed with an RBI double into the left-field corner, cutting the deficit to one, 6-5. After McCrory intentionally walked pinch-hitter Raul Reyes to load the bases anew, Pedro Beato replaced him. Beato induced a game-ending double play to third off the bat of Nick Evans to seal the game and the closer's ninth save.

The B-Mets climbed on top in the first inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk from starter Chorye Spoone. Malo drew the free pass and stole second to reach scoring position. With two outs, Sean Ratliff plated the runner with a clean single to center, making it 1-0 Binghamton.

Bowie (53-45) responded in the second against Carson. Joel Guzman led off with a single to center. With one out, Brandon Waring doubled over the third-base bag to plate Guzman all the way from first, tying the score. The Baysox snagged the lead two batters later when Greg Miclat singled to center on a hanging breaking ball from the southpaw, vaulting Bowie into a 2-1 lead.

Binghamton (50-48) evened the score in the third without the benefit of a hit. Spoone walked three consecutive hitters to load the bases with one out. Once again, Ratliff recorded the RBI, this time with a sacrifice fly to center.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis gave Binghamton the lead in the fifth. Nieuwenhuis smashed a double off the base of the fence in left, bringing Nick Evans, who had singled, around to score the go-ahead run.

Spoone settled in after the fifth-inning run, getting 1-6-3 double plays to end the next two innings. The right-hander worked seven innings and allowed just three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts for his seventh win of the season.

Carson coughed up the lead in the seventh. The trouble started with a one-out walk issued to Waring. Miclat made it count with a triple into the right-field corner, tying the game at three. Edgar Ramirez was summoned from the bullpen to spell Carson and keep the game deadlocked. However, Ramirez was struck for a triple by Carlos Rojas, plating Miclat with the go-ahead run. Brian Roberts capped the inning with an RBI single to left, upping the lead to 5-3.

Waring added a run of insurance for the Baysox in the eighth with an RBI double to right, chasing home Tyler Henson, who had doubled to lead off the frame.

Carson was charged with his second straight loss despite after allowing four unearned runs in the start.

Josh Satin and Maldonado managed two-hit days, accounting for half of Binghamton's eight hits.

The B-Mets return home for a seven-game homestand Thursday at 6:35 PM beginning with the first of four with the Erie SeaWolves. RHP Josh Stinson (7-1, 3.18) gets the call against a yet to be named starter for Erie. The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:20 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
