RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels outlasted the Trenton Thunder in the afternoon heat, claiming a, 4-2, series-clinching victory in front of 8,309 on Wednesday afternoon at The Diamond.

The Squirrels created an early run against Trenton right-hander Andrew Brackman in the first inning. Nick Noonan got Richmond started with a one-out single and was advanced to second when Brackman walked Thomas Neal. A groundout moved Noonan to third and he scored to give Richmond a 1-0 lead on a passed ball charged to Rene Rivera.

Trenton evened the score with a run against Squirrels' right-hander David Mixon in the second. Daniel Brewer and Marcos Vechionacci contributed back-to-back singles at the outset of the inning. With runners at first and third, Jack Dye sent a swinging-bunt up the third-base line. Mixon sprinted to it and was able to flip it to the catcher Tyler La Torre ahead of the arrival of Brewer. However, Brewer was ruled to have slid safely around the tag, and the game was tied, 1-1.

The Thunder pulled ahead in the sixth inning. Rene Rivera sent a two-out solo-home run to center field as Trenton took the lead for the first time, 2-1.

Richmond wrestled the lead away with a pair of runs charged to Brackman in the bottom of the inning. Clay Timpner drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. With two outs, Darren Ford drilled a triple into the alley in left-center field to tie the game, 2-2. Brackman was chased by the triple, and lefty Wilkin Arias entered in relief. His first pitch was wild and squeezed through the legs of Rivera to allow Ford to score from third for a 3-2 lead.

Brackman (1-5) was saddled with the loss for Trenton, conceding three runs -- two earned -- over 5 2/3 innings. He allowed nine hits, walked two and struck out seven.

Mixon (10-5) notched his 10th victory of the season over six innings. He pulled into a tie with Altoona's Jared Hughes for the league-lead in wins by allowing a pair of runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out four.

The Squirrels collected an insurance run in the eighth against reliever J.B. Cox. Ryan Lormand sailed Richmond's third triple of the day to right-center field and scored a batter later when Ford singled back up the middle.

Rafael Cova nailed down the win and earned his 17th save of the season, working a perfect ninth inning. Cova pulled into a tie for the league-lead in saves with his effort.

The Squirrels will travel to Bowie, MD, to open a four-game series with the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles) at 7:05 PM on Thursday night at Prince George's Stadium. LHP Clayton Tanner (5-6, 3.30) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Rick Zagone (1-1, 4.00) for Bowie.
