Orlando Solar Bears News Release
Toledo, OH - G John Curry turned aside 39 of 42 shots to help the Solar Bears to a 4-3 shootout victory over the Toledo Walleye at the Huntington Center on Saturday night.
The Walleye came out strong in the first period, and were able to strike 7:08 into the frame. A slap shot from the top of the right circle deflected across the ice, and F Brandon Svendsen was there to fire the puck under the crossbar and give Toledo a 1-0 lead. Toledo increased their margin to 2-0 at 14:30 when C Kyle Rogers one-timed a shot between the pads of Curry. The Solar Bears answered right back 32 seconds later. A shot from D Ryan Blair was stopped by G Kent Simpson, but a mad scramble in front of the net helped C Ryan Cruthers swat the loose puck into the back of the net and cut Toledo's lead to 2-1 heading into the second period.
Halfway through the middle frame, Orlando was able to even the score up at 2-2. After a failed clearing attempt, F Scott Tanksi settled down a bouncing puck and blasted the puck off the right goalpost and behind Simpson at 9:43 of the second. Orlando then took the lead when RW Ryan Reaves stole the puck at his own blue line and raced up the ice on a 2-on-0 rush with F C.J. Severyn. After a quick give-and-go, Reaves buried his chance with 5:48 to play in the frame. Toledo answered back with 2:10 remaining in the second when D Cody Lampl collected a pass in the slot and put it home, evening the score at 3-3 after 40 minutes of action.
Curry continued his stellar game in the third period, turning aside all 10 shots he faced to keep the game locked up at 3-3 going into overtime. After five minutes of 4-on-4 action the game headed into a shootout. F Dan Dries and LW Terry Broadhurst traded goals in the opening round, but RW Dan Gendur and C Mathew Sisca each scored for the Solar Bears while Curry stopped the next three shooters as the Solar Bears collected a 4-3 shootout victory.
