Big Nailers' First Stuns Titans, 5-0
January 5, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release
WHEELING, WV - Sometimes when a snowball starts gaining speed downhill, it becomes impossible to stop and turns into an avalanche. Such was the first period for the Trenton Titans at WesBanco Arena.
Paul Crowder grabbed his first goal - one that would quickly turn into a hat trick - with the first shot of the game just 49 seconds in. He would score twice more in the next six minutes, as the Wheeling Nailers (15-12-2-436 points) dominated the period en route to five goals and the eventual 5-0 win before 3,148 fans.
This was the second time the Titans have been shutout this year, falling at home to Greenville (3-0) on November 24.
Scott Wedgewood (10-9-2) got the start in goal for the Titans (14-14-3-233 points), but went to the bench after allowing three goals on just seven shots in under seven minutes. Niko Hovinen (18 saves) replaced him and was immediately greeted with Crowder's third goal, just 15 seconds after Crowder's second chased Wedgewood.
Crowder's "trick" and Scott Zurevinski's eighth of the year at 14:35 ended the scoring, and effectively ended the contest as well.
The Titans could not solve Scott Darling (7-5-0-1), who stopped 27 shots for his second shutout of the year. The win also moved him to 2-1 against the Titans this season.
Trenton, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, has very little time to think about this one and must turn around quickly to face Atlantic Division foe Elmira, at First Arena in Elmira, NY, at 4:05 pm tomorrow. Coverage can be heard online on stream WRRC-2 at 1077theBronc.com immediately following Rider University Women's Basketball (and will be joined in progress if necessary) and at AmericaOne.com. "The Bronc" Daryle Dobos, will once again call all the action.
