Elmira Jackals News Release

READING, Pa. - The Elmira Jackals were denied their third consecutive victory as they fell to the Reading Royals by a 6-4 score on Saturday night at Sovereign Center. The win ran Elmira's record to 16-15-3 on the season.

The first period was played at a breakneck pace with the Jackals getting the best of the action. Elmira scored three times in the first 9:08 to grab a 3-0 lead. Jordan Southorn opened things up with his fourth goal at 3:03 while the teams were skating 4-on-4. Four minutes and 46 seconds later Artem Dekmov tapped home his team-leading 18th goal off of assists from Dustin Gazley and Andrew Rowe. That goal chased Reading starter Sergey Kostenko and brought Drew McIntyre on in relief. Jean Bourbeau welcomed him by scoring on the first shot that McIntyre faced at 9:08 to put Elmira ahead 3-0. Reading rallied, though and scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart. Adam Comrie (13:57) and Joel Champagne (14:44) put the Royals on the board and made it a tight game again. The Jackals, and goalie Maxime Clermont, shut the door the rest of the way so the Jackals began the second with the lead.

Reading erased the advantage with its first of three power play goals on the night. Kirk MacDonald scored from close range 2:30 into the stanza to knot the score at three. Elmira didn't blink in the face of some adversity and its captain restored the lead in short order. Bourbeau scored off of a rebound in front 1:13 after MacDonald's goal to restore Elmira's lead. Reading had a chance to tie it when Dannick Paquette was awarded a penalty shot with just over five minutes gone by, but Clermont slammed the door to protect the lead. Reading did eventually tie it, though, with Champagne's second of the night, on the power play, at 9:35.

Elmira picked up a late second-period power play that carried over to the first 1:41 of the third. The chance to reclaim the lead went by the wayside, however, and it was Reading's power play that produced the eventual winning goal. Paquette jammed home a rebound after Clermont made an acrobatic diving save with his shoulder. The Royals added to their first lead of the night with David Vallorani chipping in an insurance goal with just over nine minutes gone by in the final frame. Elmira had a pair of power play opportunities in the second half of the third, but couldn't get the offense in gear.

Clermont suffered his first loss in his last five starts while making 24 stops. The Jackals ended the night 0-for-8 on the power play and 2-for-5 on the penalty kill.
