Cupid's Arrow Lands Nailers Key Division Win

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers continued their three-game homestand on Friday night, doing so with four familiar faces back in the lineup. Denver Manderson, Carter Rowney, Zack Torquato, and Barry Goers all found the scoresheet, as the Nailers doubled up the Reading Royals, 4-2 at WesBanco Arena.

For the third straight game between the two sides, the losing team opened the scoring. On Friday night, that meant the Royals drew first blood, as Josh Brittain banged in the rebound of a point shot that was taken by Michal Cajkovsky. Reading's lone lead of the evening lasted for 1:40, before the Nailers came up with the equalizer. Dustin Stevenson's drive from the left point was kicked away, but the rebound came out to Carter Rowney, who set up Sahir Gill for a rocket from the right side of the slot.

The second period went almost entirely Wheeling's way, as the home team found the back of the net twice, while outshooting the Royals, 20-7. The go-ahead goal came at the 1:53 mark, when Zack Torquato sent a home run pass ahead to Denver Manderson. Manderson caught the pass in stride on the left side, before faking to his forehand, and sliding a shot around Riley Gill's left pad. Less than seven minutes later, the Nailers extended their lead, as Carter Rowney picked the top-right corner of the goal, while his team was playing with a 4-on-3 advantage.

Brittain brought Reading to within a goal at the 11:07 mark of the third period, when he roofed a shot from the bottom of the right circle. That was followed up by Ryan Cruthers rebound attempt, which was robbed by Mike Condon, who made a lunging save with his left arm. Condon's save helped the Nailers finish off their victory, as Denver Manderson's shorthanded empty net goal gave the contest a 4-2 final score.

Mike Condon backstopped his 15th win of the season for Wheeling, stopping 28 of the 30 shots he faced. Riley Gill took the defeat for the Royals, making 36 saves on 39 shots.

The Nailers will conclude their three-game homestand on Saturday night, when they take on the Elmira Jackals at 7:00.
