Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers received another strong pitching performance on Thursday night, as they held the Windy City Thunderbolts to a run on five hits in a 5-1 victory to complete the sweep of the Thunderbolts at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The victory for Lake Erie (20-21) marked their second sweep of the season, as they held the Thunderbolts (17-26) to just a run on 11 hits during the three game stretch. The Thunderbolts have now lost four out of their last five.

Dave Middendorf (6-3) turned in another outstanding performance, as he tossed eight strong innings and allowed just a run on four hits while fanning three in a winning effort. The Lake Erie starting pitchers allowed a run on nine hits over 24 innings of work in the series.

The Crushers used a pair of big bombs to take control in the bottom of the third inning. Max Casper reached on a one out single, and Andrew Davis followed with a two-run bomb to snap a scoreless tie. The homer was his 10th of the season, second most in the Frontier League.

Anderson Hidalgo's second hit of the night came two batters after Davis's bomb, a two out single to extend the inning, setting the table for Russ Moldenhauer who followed with a two-run shot of his own, his sixth of the season.

The Crushers added one more in the home half of the fifth inning. Daniel Bowman started the inning with a double, and made his way to third on Moldenhauer's two bagger down the left field line. Emmanuel Quiles followed Moldenhauer with a single to center to score Bowman.

Windy City was held scoreless through the first 25 innings of the series, until they pushed their lone run across in the top of the eighth. Andrew Brauer started the inning with a double, and came home later in the inning on Doug Joyce's groundout.

Middendorf scored the victory for the Crushers, and has allowed just six earned runs over his last three starts, while tossing 23 innings during that stretch. Travis Tingle (3-3) allowed five runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings of action and took the loss.

Batters 4-7 in the Lake Erie lineup hit safely multiple times. Moldenhauer led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, coming a triple away from hitting for the cycle. Bowman, Hidalgo and Quiles all hit safely twice. Hidalgo had a monster series for the Crushers, going 8-for-13 with a run scored and he drove in six.

The Crushers will begin a three game series with the Rockford Aviators at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday night. The Crushers will start right hander Matt Smith (2-2, 5.56) and the Aviators will start righty Trevor Harden (2-4, 3.94). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
