
Grizzlies Top Wild Things in Back-And-Forth Battle

A back and fourth affair saw the Gateway Grizzlies top the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, 8-7 on the Fourth of July.
Gateway (28-13) scored their first two runs in the bottom of the first off Shawn Blackwell.
With runners on first and second, Landon Hernandez singled to right field scoring Johnathan Johnson. The next batter, Jed Butler, added the second run beating out a double play scoring Chris McClendon. This put the home team up 2-0.
The Grizzlies tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Max Ayarza singled up the middle scoring Butler from third and pushing the lead to 3-0.
In the top of the fifth, Washington (21-21) would tie the game.
Two home runs, a solo shot by Shain Stoner (his sixth) and a two-run bomb by Alex Buccilli (his first) tied the game at three.
After Gateway scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, Washington took the lead back in the top of the sixth.
Stewart Ijames launched his fifth home run of, a two run-homer, to knot the game at five. Scott Kalamar gave the Wild Things the lead back with an RBI double. Washington took control with a 6-5 lead.
Once again Gateway tied it up, but once again Washington took the lead back.
Tied at 6-6 in the top of seventh, Jovan Rosa flexed his muscle for a solo homerun. Washington was ahead 7-6 at this point.
Gateway took their final lead of the game after Jose Flores hit a two-run homerun off Amalio Diaz to make it 8-7 Grizzlies in the bottom of the eight. Jon Meyers added a RBI double to have the end the game at 9-7.
Washington travels to Evansville for a three game set with Otters beginning Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. EDT. Airtime on WJPA 95.3 FM is 7:25 p.m.
The Wild Things return to CONSOL Energy Park for a three game set on July 9. Tickets for that series and for the 2013 All Star Festivities, which will be contested at CONSOL Energy Park in mid July, are available at the box office.
