
CornBelters Keep Freedom from Ringing in 4-2 Win

NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, defeated the Florence Freedom 4-2 on Independence Day at the Corn Crib, taking two out of three in the series with the Frontier League East Division leaders. The CornBelters host the West Division leaders, the Gateway Grizzlies, in a weekend series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
The Belters used three straight hits to lead off the second inning to score the game's first run on an RBI single up the middle by Mike Mobbs.
The Freedom finally dented the scoreboard in the sixth inning in similar fashion with three straight hits to start the frame and an RBI bounder up the middle from David Harris. David Carrillo was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Freedom a 2-1 lead.
The CornBelters tied the game in the seventh when Mike Mobbs reached on a bloop double along the right field line, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by T.J. Gavlik.
The Belters took the lead in the eighth as Mike Schwartz led off with a base hit and was sacrificed to second, then scored on a double over the right center fence by Pat McKenna. Oscar Garcia drove a single up the middle to score McKenna for the insurance run.
Michael Schweiss (1-0) earned his first professional win with eight innings of work, giving up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Alan Oaks pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save. Daniel Jensen (4-2) took the loss.
