Syracuse Crunch News Release

Syracuse, NY (January 30, 2009) - On a night when New York State Governor David Paterson dropped the ceremonial first puck, the Syracuse Crunch were shut out by the Lake Erie Monsters tonight, 3-0, in front of 4,629 fans at the War Memorial at Oncenter.

Coming off a successful 3-0-1-0 week in which they gained seven of a possible eight points, the Crunch looked to keep its four-game points streak alive in its first game after the all-star break in an important divisional match-up against Lake Erie.

After a scoreless first frame that saw the Monsters outshoot the Crunch 8-6, Lake Erie tallied the game's first maker 6:25 into the second stanza.

Matt Hendricks corralled the puck behind the Crunch's net and made a wraparound move on Crunch starter Dan LaCosta. Somehow the puck slid by LaCosta on the far side and Lake Erie took a 1-0 lead.

The Monsters outshot the Crunch 11-3 in the second, a season-low in shots in a single period for Syracuse.

The Crunch had a great opportunity to tie the game about five minutes into the third on a power play chance when Maksim Mayorov made a slick cross-ice pass to Derek MacKenzie at the right face-off dot, but his bid rang off the right post.

The score remained that way until the final minute when Bryan Marshall and Per Ledin added empty-netters at the 19:08 and 19:24 marks, respectively, to seal the win for the Monsters.

Lake Erie netminder Tyler Weiman stopped all 19 shots he faced en route to the win. LaCosta turned away 20 of 21 bids.
