Amerks Rally To Down Griffins In Shootout
January 30, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
( Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans rallied from a 2-0 deficit and newcomer Ross Carlson scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Amerks a 3-2 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins tonight at Van Andel Arena in the first leg of a two-game set. The win is Rochester's first this season against its North Division opponent as it improved to 16-24-0-4 on the season.
Michael Duco and David Brine scored Rochester's pair of goals in regulation as goaltender Mike Brodeur turned away 35 of 37 shots he faced tonight en route to first star honors. Sergei Kolosov and Ryan Oulahen notched the tallies for the hometown Griffins, while Jimmy Howard recorded 32 saves between the pipes to garner second star accolades.
After a scoreless first period, Kolosov put Grand Rapids on the board first with his first goal of the season at 6:19 of the second stanza. Mattias Ritola and Jamie Tardif were each credited with assists on the play.
The Griffins would extend their lead to 2-0 on the power play, taking advantage of a Jordan Henry holding infraction, as Oulahen converted on a Darren Haydar pass to give Grand Rapids a little breathing room.
Rochester finally responded midway through the second period with Duco's ninth tally of the season coming at the 10:48 mark of the frame to cut the Griffins' lead in half. Shawn Matthias and former Griffin Randall Gelech picked up assists on the play.
The Amerks continued their rally as Brine tied the game at 2-2 with his fifth goal of the season at 11:37 of the third period, with the assist going to Michal Repik.
The game would remain in a deadlock until the end of regulation, and after a scoreless overtime period, newcomer Ross Carlson, in just his first game as an Amerk since joining Rochester earlier today, netted the only goal in the shootout to lift the Amerks to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory.
