Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY (November 27, 2010) - The Syracuse Crunch battled back to tie the game in the third period, but gave up a game-winning power play goal with 50 seconds left in regulation in a 2-1 loss to the Toronto Marlies this afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum. The loss was the Crunch's fourth straight overall and pushed the club's season-high winless streak to seven games (0-6-0-1).
Simon Gysbers got Toronto on the board first at the 11:58 mark of the opening period, when he found a rebound in the slot from a Joey Crabb shot and beat Timo Pielmeier to the stick side with a shot back against the grain to put the Crunch down 1-0. The score stayed that way through the first 20 minutes with Toronto outshooting the Crunch 13-9 in the frame.
It remained a 1-0 game until the 9:50 mark of the third period, when Nathan Paetsch tied the game at 1-1 after taking a pass from Matt Beleskey and floating a wrister on goal from the left point that got through a screened Ben Scrivens. Nigel Williams picked up the other assist on the tally.
It appeared briefly as if the Crunch took the lead with about four minutes remaining when Trevor Smith swatted in a rebound from a Beleskey point shot, but the officials ruled that the net was knocked off its moorings before the puck crossed the goal line.
That seemed to turn the momentum in favor of Toronto and they took advantage when Crunch captain Joe DiPenta was whistled off for interference with just 1:43 left in regulation. Josh Engel picked up the rebound on the right side of Christian Hanson's shot and lifted it over a sprawling Pielmeier to give Toronto the late 2-1 lead.
Pielmeier was pulled for the extra attacker, but the Crunch could not come up with the equalizer. Pielmeier finished with 36 saves on 38 shots and was named the game's third star for his effort.
The Crunch return home on Sunday, November 28 at 3:00 p.m. vs. Hamilton at The Oncenter War Memorial Arena. All the action can be heard starting at 2:45 p.m. on 105.9 FM The Big Talker. The game will switch to the Crunch's flagship station, The Score 1260, at approximately 5:30 p.m.
