Adirondack Phantoms News Release
The Hershey Bears got goalie Braden Holtby back from a month-long stretch to the Washington Capitals and he thrived in his return with a hard-earned 28 save shutout of the Adirondack Phantoms. Hershey won the Saturday night encounter with Adirondack 4-0 with Holtby making several fine saves on quality Phantoms drives to frustrate the visitors.
Adirondack's closest call to breaking the shutout bid came in the middle of the second period when Greg Moore rushed up the right wing and blasted a shot that beat Holtby on his glove-hand side but rang off the crossbar. The Phantoms had several fine chances particularly in the third period that had Holtby sometimes scrambling but the talented netminder was able to come up with the puck each time.
Johan Backlund and Nic Riopel split the time in net for the Phantoms. Backlund left the game in the 2nd period with an apparent injury to his right leg. Each goalie surrendered two goals in their 30 minutes of ice time.
A former Philadelphia Phantom excelled in the game as Boyd Kane scored a pair of goals. Kane won a Calder Cup with the Phantoms in 2005 and was their captain dating back to 2004. He is in his second season with the Hershey Bears. Dmitri Kugrashev and Andrew Gordon scored the other goals for the Bears. Gordon is the AHL's leading scorer with 15 goals and 29 points. Hershey are the two-time defending Calder Cup Champions.
The game marked the return of Eric Wellwood who had been up with the Philadelphia Flyers this past week although did not appear in game action. He was typically teamed up on a line with Denis Hamel and Ben Holmstrom.
Adirondack concludes their tough stretch of four games in five nights with a Sunday evening encounter at the Connecticut Whale at 5pm. The game against the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers is also game two of a five game road swing for the Phantoms.
Adirondack's next home is Saturday, December 11 against the Portland Pirates featuring the team's first annual Teddy Bear Toss. Fans get to bring their teddy bear donations for the Salvation Army to the game and throw them on the ice after the Phantoms score their first goal. Don't be left out!
