Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - In front of a sellout crowd of 4,002, the Tri-City Storm used balanced scoring to rip the Lincoln Stars, 4-2, Friday at the Viaero Center.
Nico Sturm, Jake Wahlin, Paul Washe and Wade Allison scored for Tri-City, giving the Storm the energy to move within two points of Lincoln for first place in the Western Conference.
Tri-City never trailed, backstopped by a 22-save win by goalie Jake Kielly. The 19-year-old Clarkson commit outdueled Peyton Jones, who allowed four goals on 36 shots.
The Storm wins the eight-game season series over the Stars, picking up points in five of eight (4-3-0-1).
Amidst standing and raucous fans, the Storm gave the home crowd a roar at 3:33 of the first. Lincoln defenseman Ryan Jones turned the puck over to Nico Sturm, who deked to the forehand and stuffed top shelf around Peyton Jones.
Sturm, 20, has nine goals and 21 points in his first USHL season.
After Lincoln's Patrick Polino evened up the game at 11:17 of the first on the power play, Tri-City went right back to work. Jake Wahlin started from his own blue line, broke into the offensive zone, and ramped the puck off a defender's stick top shelf at 13:06, assisted by Jack McNeely.
The Storm's momentum continued into the second frame, where it scored twice and allowed one goal.
Washe started off the second-period scoring at 7;31, his sixth of the season, after he found a bouncing puck at the right circle and slung it low past Jones. Joe Cipollone created the bounce by hitting a slap shot off a defender's leg. Walker Duehr earned the secondary helper.
Twenty seconds after the goal, Lincoln's Jack Badini was assessed a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for head contact after checking Alex Limoges in the jaw. The Storm failed to convert and Dom Mersch scored for the Stars at 16:49 of the second to bring Lincoln within one.
Wade Allison saved his best for late in the second. With 40 seconds left, he deked Christian Evers out of position from the right circle, and sniped the puck short side, bar down and past the goalie Jones. Allison has 14 goals this season, 12 in the last 14 games, to even Carson Meyer for the team lead. Dan Labosky and Paul Washe took assists.
The Storm plays tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 16, at 7:05 p.m. against Des Moines, the first time this season the Storm travels to Buccaneer Arena.
Check out a pair of Storm home games next Friday, Jan. 22, and Saturday, Jan. 23 against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Friday is Sammy's Superheroes Night as the Storm hopes to cure pediatric cancer with Sammy's Superheroes Foundation. Tri-City will wear one-time only specialty jerseys.
Saturday is Casino Night, with fun prizes handed out at the Viaero Center. Plus, it's a Coca Cola Family Four Pack, with four tickets, hot dogs, cokes and chips for $44.
