Ralston, NE - Nathan Krusko scored in the first period and Austin Lemieux tied the game in the third on his first USHL goal to force overtime. However, on a power play advantage in overtime, Ian Scheid scored as the Sioux City Musketeers defeated the Omaha Lancers, 3-2, in front of 3,004 at Ralston Arena on Friday night.
The Lancers came out of the gate with pressure if the opening half of the first period and the work paid off. Nick Jenny took the puck at the right point in the offensive zone and sent a pass cross-ice to Jacob Bryson. After settling the puck, Bryson sent a low shot on net that Nathan Krusko deflected by Musketeers goaltender Cam Gornet for a 1-0 lead at 8:13 of the opening frame. The goal was Krusko's ninth of the year assisted by Bryson and Jenny.
Sioux City stormed back in the second period to take the lead in a matter of minutes. After goaltender Kris Oldham dove to his right and jumped on top of the puck, Teemu Pulkkinen pulled it free and tapped it over the goal line to tie the game, 1-1. The goal came at the 15:47 mark of the middle period and was Pulkkinen's 11th of the year, unassisted.
Less than two minutes later, the Musketeers took a 2-1 lead. Phillip Knies sent a pass to Jackson Keane who moved down the right side in the offensive zone. As he got to the right wing circle, Keane ripped a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Kris Oldham to give Sioux City a one-goal lead on his seventh of the year. The lone assist of the go-ahead goal went to Phillip Knies on the pass to Keane for his fourth helper of the season.
In the third period Austin Lemieux scored his first USHL goal to tie the game at two apiece on a deflection in front of the net. Michael Bigelbach took the puck inside the blue line and fired a shot towards the net into traffic. Lemieux got his stick on it and the puck sailed by Cam Gornet to even the score with 10:45 left in the game. The goal was Lemieux's first with assists from Bigelbach on the shot and Mitch Perrault. Bigelbach's assist was his fifth of the year and sixth point overall while Perrault recorded his seventh and 17th point overall.
After no scoring the rest of regulation, overtime decided the game. Following a Brannon McManus slashing penalty in the extra frame, Sioux City's Ian Scheid took the puck in the left wing circle and wristed it over the shoulder of Kris Oldham, just under the cross bar, for the game-winning goal and a 3-2 victory.
Oldham stopped 23 of 26 shots while the Lancers peppered 35 total shots on Cam Gornet.
