Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Nick Swaney scored with six seconds remaining in overtime Friday, lifting the Waterloo Black Hawks past the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18's, 4-3 at Young Arena.
A three-on-three faceoff in the Team USA zone with ten seconds to play set up Swaney's winning score. Ronnie Hein pushed the draw into the slot, and Swaney dashed to the net mouth, roofing a shot over goaltender Joseph Woll. The assist by Hein was his third of the contest.
The Hawks were in position to get the winner thanks to a sparkling glove save by Cale Morris a little more than two minutes earlier, denying a breakaway by Luke Martin.
Team USA had put seven shots on net during the opening two minutes of the first period, including one that went in when Graham McPhee knocked the rebound of a Trent Frederic wraparound across the line at 1:41. It was the NTDP's only lead of the night.
The Hawks answered 6:30 into the game. Moving up left wing in transition, Hunter Luhmann lifted a shot to the netting over Woll's opposite shoulder. Then with 56.8 seconds remaining before intermission, Team USA's goalie stopped a Hein shot, but Liam Pecararo used his backhand to cash in on the rebound and give the Hawks the lead.
The teams exchanged goals during the second period. McPhee scored his second of the game at 11:12 under similar circumstances, shoveling a puck into the net after Frederic had toted it from behind the goal. However, less than five minutes later, Swaney capitalized on a Michael Davies rebound, lifting a shot from the slot under the crossbar.
In the third, Team USA answered by converting their first power play of the night at 8:23. Chad Krys stepped in from the right point and scored as Morris was screened by Joey Anderson at the top of the crease.
The Black Hawks and National Team Development Program U-18's get together again Saturday. It's a college night, with $8 tickets for all college students presenting ID at the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office. For details, call (319) 291-7680.
