Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Matt Thompson, Robbie Erlin and Josh Lueke combined to shutout Charleston for the second time this series as the Hickory Crawdads defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 1-0, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of a crowd of 4.884 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Charleston falls to 10-14 as it is swept for the first time this season and first at Riley Park since Aug. 2008, while Hickory climbs to 14-10, winning its sixth in a row.
Hickory provided the game's only offense in the first, when Cody Podraza led off with a double against Charleston's Jose Ramirez, moved to third on a flyout, then scored on Miguel Velazquez's sacrifice fly to centerfield for a 1-0 lead.
Ramirez (1-1) would allow just one more hit over his outing, but took a hard-luck loss in 6.0 impressive innings. The Dominican native walked just one batter, struck out three and retired 16 straight batters between the first and sixth innings.
Thompson (2-0) won his second straight start blanking the RiverDogs on five hits through 5.0 innings while walking one and fanning six. Erlin sunk six RiverDogs in his 3.0 relief innings, while Lueke notched his league-leading eighth save in an uneventful ninth inning.
DeAngelo Mack, Jimmy Paredes and Kyle Higashioka all had two hits for Charleston, while Mike Ortiz knocked a pair of doubles for the Crawdads.
The RiverDogs head out of town for their second eight-game road trip of the season. First, the club heads to Lakewood, N.J. to take on the Lakewood BlueClaws, the Single-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. The series is set to begin Monday night at 6:35 with the RiverDogs sending right-hander Kelvin Perez (2-0, 1.05) to the mound to face Jonathan Pettibone (1-0, 4.57) for the BlueClaws.
