Hickory Crawdads News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - The Hickory Crawdads extended their six-game winning streak and completed the sweep of the Charleston RiverDogs with a 1-0 shutout win, before 4,884 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Saturday night. It marked the second time in the last three games that the Crawdads shut out the RiverDogs, as Hickory takes over sole possession of 1st place in the Northern Division.

The Crawdads (14-10) scored the game's only run in the top of the first frame. DH Cody Podraza led off the game with a double down the left field line, extending his hitting streak to eight games. Podraza then moved to third on a RF Jared Prince fly ball out and scored on a sacrifice fly hit by CF Miguel Velazquez, making it 1-0.

Crawdads starter RHP Matt Thompson (2-0) then shut down the RiverDogs (10-14) through five scoreless innings, during which he struck out six batters and scattered five singles. LHP Robbie Erlin then took over with three scoreless frames, striking out six and allowing only two hits, before RHP Josh Lueke closed the 1-0 win with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

The final inning featured one of the top defensive plays of the season for the Crawdads. With one out and no one on, RiverDogs C Kyle Higashioka skied a foul ball mid way down the right field line towards the stands. 2B Joe Bonadonna came racing over from the infield and dove into the crowd to make the catch in mid-air on the foul ball for the inning's second out. Lueke then quickly induced a grounder to third for the final out in the frame, as the 'Dads wrapped up their eight-game road trip with six straight wins. RiverDogs RHP Jose A. Ramirez (1-2) was tagged with the loss for Charleston, despite retiring 16 in a row at one point
