Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Hagerstown, MD - The Augusta GreenJackets were once again victimized by the middle innings in a 5-4 loss to the Hagerstown Suns on Saturday night. The Suns scored three times in the sixth to reclaim the lead and cruise to their 2,000th victory in their 30 years of existence as a minor league franchise.
Augusta starter Chris Heston was solid through the first five innings but ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing a single to Francisco Soriano to open the frame while holding a 4-2 lead. Heston then sent a pickoff throw wide of first to move Soriano to third and walked Sean Nicol to put runners at the corners. Stephen Souza doubled to right-center on the first pitch from Heston score both and tie the game. Souza scored on Justin Bloxom's double to give the Suns the 5-4 lead.
Souza got things started off Heston in the first with a towering solo home run over the left field fence. Soriano brought in another in the third on a sacrifice fly to extend Hagerstown's lead to 2-0.
After Suns starter Trevor Holder retired the side in order through the first three innings, he ran into trouble to open the fourth, allowing back-to-back singles to Evan Crawford and Ryan Cavan. Chris Dominguez doubled after that to score both and tie things at two. With two outs in the inning and Luke Anders at the plate, Dominguez scampered home on a wild pitch to give the GreenJackets the 3-2 lead. Crawford - in his second straight multi-hit game and third of the road trip - singled in the fifth as one of five Augusta hits in the inning to extend the lead to 4-2.
Heston's struggles cost him a chance at his second win of the season, firing five solid innings and leaving after facing four hitters in the sixth and not retiring a single one. Heston (1-2) allowed five runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Augusta's bats were silenced by Suns reliever Kyle Morrison (1-0), who tossed three scoreless, hitless innings with five strikeouts. He allowed one walk - the only GreenJackets baserunner over the final four innings. All seven Jackets hits and all four of their runs came in the fourth and fifth innings.
After dropping five of the eight games on the current road trip, and playing 16 of their first 24 games, the GreenJackets return home to Augusta on Monday for the first of 20 home games in the month of May. After a scheduled day off on Sunday, Jorge Bucardo (0-2, 2.86) takes the ball for the GreenJackets in the opener of a four-game set with Greenville. The Drive will counter by sending righty Ryan Pressly (0-1, 5.40) to the mound. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
