Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
For the second straight night, the Kannapolis Intimidators used two-out hits to their advantage and good starting pitching in a 5-1 win on Saturday night to split a four game series with the Lakewood BlueClaws. The Intimidators finished their homestand with a 3-5 record.
Starter Terry Doyle allowed only a solo home run to Darin Ruf in the fourth inning as the only run against the righty. Doyle (3-1) went eight strong innings, the most for an Intimidators (11-13) starter this season. He allowed four hits and struck out a season-high 11 as well. Brandon Kloess struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the win.
Down 1-0 in the fifth inning Kevin Dubler doubled with two outs and was brought home by Davidson College's Zach Kayne on a single to left. It was Kayne's first hit and RBI in his first game as an Intimidator. Daniel Wagner then doubled in Kayne from first to take a 2-1 lead.
In the seventh, the Intimidators scored two more with two out as BlueClaws (13-11) starter Brody Colvin (1-4) exited with two out and two on in the seventh. Jacob Diekman entered and allowed a roller up the middle off Wagner's bat. A communication error up the middle between the infielders allowed the ball to go into center and score both Jose Vargas and Dubler.
Wagner had two hits and three RBI on the game and for the second homestand in a row, the Intimidators end with two victories.
The Intimidators will be on the road to Lexington, KY and will have their first scheduled off day this season before a 7:05 pm game on Monday. Cameron Bayne (1-3) will start that game and he will be opposed by righty Brandt Walker (1-1).
