Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats (16-8) stayed on top of the South Atlantic League Southern Division by sweeping a four-game series from the visiting Lexington Legends with a 3-1 win Saturday night. Starter Brandon Moore and reliever Colin McHugh combined to allow just a run on five hits with 11 strikeouts.

Moore earned his first win of the year by limiting the Legends to one run in six innings, working around runners in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Moore set new personal season highs by throwing six innings with six strikeouts. McHugh, whose command was sharp, gave up just one single in the final three innings while striking out five Legends.

The Savannah runs came in the first and fourth innings off Lexington (11-13) starter Juan Minaya. With two outs in the first, Sam Honeck walked, took second when Minaya hit Jefrey Marte with a pitch, and scored on Kai Gronauer's single to right.

The Legends scored their only run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Astros first round pick Jiovani Mier walked, advanced to third on a double by Jacob Goebbert and scored on an RBI groundout by right fielder JD Martinez.

Savannah wasted no time answering back, retaking the lead for good in the home fourth inning. Cesar Puello led off with a fine bunt single on the left side, and after Jeff Flagg was hit by a pitch, the Gnats had runners at first and second with no outs. Puello advanced to third when LF Alex Gregory flew out to left. Shortstop Luis Rivera followed with a chopper to third that Lexington third baseman Jonathan Meyer, rushing against Puello's speed, bobbled to allow the go-ahead run to score and Rivera to reach first safely. Alonzo Harris followed with an infield hit to load up the bases for Juan Lagares who gave the Gnats an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Harris, in his second start in the leadoff spot, was 2-4 and was robbed of an extra base hit by a diving play in leftcenter field by Legends centerfielder Grant Hogue in the seventh inning.

The Gnats begin an eight-game roadtrip to Delmarva and Lakewood beginning Monday night in Delmarva, MD at 7:05. Catch all of the action live on News/Talk 630 and on sandgnats.com. The Gnats next home game is Wednesday May 12, when the Gnats host the Rome Braves on a Baseball Bingo night presented by News/Talk 630 and Magic 103.9.
