Kane County Cougars News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - Jose Pineda's leadoff home run in the top of the 10th inning Sunday afternoon propelled the Kane County Cougars to a 3-2 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Starter Jeff Gray worked six innings and gave up just two runs before the bullpen carried the load the rest of the way. The Cougars, who have won five consecutive games for the second time this season, maintained their lead in first place at the top of the Western Division.

The Kernels grabbed an unearned run against Gray in the third and added a tally in the fifth for a 2-0 game. The Cougars had been hitting the ball hard but stranding runners against Stephen Marek through the first five innings before cracking the scoring column in the sixth. Jeff Baisley smacked his eighth home run of the season for a 2-1 deficit, and Raul Padron's two-out, run-scoring double tied it and brought home Steve Kleen, who had four hits in the contest.

Gray allowed four hits, walked two and fanned six in his six frames. Relievers John Herrera and Brad Kilby each recorded two outs, and Steve Sharpe pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball to force the bonus inning. Pineda belted his homer off Tim Mattison to put the Cougars ahead 3-2. Then T.J. Franco nailed down his second save in as many days.

The Cougars (25-18), seven games above .500 for the second time this season, face the Kernels (20-24) again Monday night at 6:30 CDT. Jason Ray (2-1, 3.68) is set to square off against Robert Mosebach (3-1, 2.74).
