Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Kane County's Jose Pineda drilled a Tim Mattison (1-3) offering over the wall in left to lead off the top of the tenth inning and give the Cougars a 3-2 win over the Kernels Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Mark Trumbo started a rally in the bottom half of the inning by drawing a leadoff walk from T. J. Franco, but after pinch-runner Travis Schlichting moved to second on a sacrifice by Larry Infante Franco shut the door on the Kernels. Brad Coon flew out to center, which allowed Schlichting to tag and move to third, but pinch-hitter Jordan Renz flew out to Pineda in right to end the game.
Steven Sharpe (1-0) earned the win for the Cougars with 1 2/3 scoreless innings of no-hit relief.
The Kernels grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third when Larry Infante doubled and scored on a throwing error, then extended the lead by a run in the fifth when Dallas Morris scored on a single by Infante.
Infante was 3-for-3 on the day as the Kernels fell to 20-24, their worst record of the season to date.
The Cougars touched Cedar Rapids starter Stephen Marek for a pair of runs in the sixth inning when Jeff Baisley smacked a leadoff homer and Raul Padron knocked an RBI double later in the frame.
Trumbo represented the winning run at third base in the seventh with two outs, but lefthanded hurler Brad Kilby entered the game from the bullpen and quelled the Kernels rally by getting Coon to hit a nubber back to the mound.
Kane County, which improved to 25-18 and increased its Western Division lead with the win, had 13 hits to the Kernels' six.
The two teams meet again Monday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium for a 6:30 p.m.
start. Right-hander Robert Mosebach (3-1, 2.74) will oppose Cougars righty Jason Ray (2- 1, 3.68) on a $1 hot dog Monday.
