Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities dropped another heartbreaker Sunday evening, falling to the Clinton LumberKings at John O'Donnell Stadium, 6-5, in 11 innings. The Swing jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the special 5:00 p.m Sunday starting time, but ended up having to come from behind to force extras.

Quad Cities (17-24) falls seven games under .500 for the first time this season, losing their third in a row. Clinton (15-28) hands the Swing another extra-inning loss, as Quad Cities now has dropped four straight extra-inning affairs and are 3-4 in such games this season.

Tied at five in the bottom of the 11th, the LumberKings' Brian Valichka led off with a double off Brian Stitt and was replaced by pinch runner Jose Vallejo. David Peterson laid down a bunt, but when Stitt's throw to third came in late Clinton had men on the corners with nobody out. Quad Cities brought the infield in, putting themselves in position tom come to the plate with a bouncing ball toward second baseman Daniel Nelson. Hung out to dry, Vallejo stayed caught in a rundown long enough for the runners behind him to advance to second and third. Another bouncing ball - this one with one out from Truan Mehl - was gathered by Stitt, who stared Peterson to a dead halt between second and third. But the closer then turned and fired the ball towards first base, recording the second out of the frame but allowing Peterson to race home and score the go-ahead run.

The scoring started in the bottom of the second. Adam Rodgers singled with one out, and watch back-to-back walks issued to load the bases. Casey Rowlett then stepped up and launched a double deep into the right-center field alley, one-hopping the wall and driving home a pair. A sacrifice fly followed off the bat of Jose Martinez, giving Quad Cities a 3-0 lead.

Clinton fought back in the top of the third. With two outs and a man on second, the LumberKings rallied for three consecutive run-scoring hits. John Mayberry's double put them on the board, and he came home on a hard-hit single to right from Freddie Thon. Joe Kemp capped the rally with a triple to right, evening up the score at 3-3.

The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the fifth, when Nelson slapped a leadoff double into left. Nelson had moved no further two outs later, so he took matters into his own hands and stole third base with Bryan Anderson at the plate. Moments later Anderson hammered a double to the wall in right field, putting the Swing back in front, 4-3.

The LumberKings would get even again in the seventh, with a single by Mehl plating Peterson. In the eighth, Thon led off with a single to right and was taken down for pinch runner Terry Blunt. Blunt moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on an error, eventually coming home on a groundout by K.C. Herren for a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Swing rallied. Consecutive singles from Martinez and Nelson put men on the corners, and a sacrifice fly from Colby Rasmus brought the score back to an even 5-5.

Stitt (0-1) took the loss for Quad Cities, allowing one run on one hit in two frames. Starter Kyle Sadlowski gave up three runs in five innings of work.

The win was earned by Kevin Altman (1-3) despite the fact that he initially blew the save in the ninth. The Clinton closer ended up going three innings, allowing one run on four hits. LumberKings' starter Kyle Rogers was touched for four runs on four hits in five innings that included four walks and four strikeouts.
